Darby Street Light Mural
Produced by The Wall Station, ‘Darby Street Light Mural’ is a unique collaboration between visual artist Nick Fintan and lighting creative Jared Lawlor from Herb Urban.
Tucked away in a pedestrian laneway just off Darby Street in Cooks Hill, Newcastle, this 30 sqm interactive light mural brings luminous and moody neon hues to a neglected urban space.
As visitors pass through the laneway, Bluetooth pings from phones and devices interact with the lighting, triggering different colour changes and formations. Nick’s collage styled mural draws inspiration from Newcastle’s expansive coastline, whilst Jared’s solar powered LED lighting strips are a reference to sustainable living.
“Lighting in urban spaces can help us feel safe” says project manager Jacinta Fintan, “However too much lighting can make us feel seen and in the spotlight. This public artwork is an exploration in how subtle lighting can activate spaces and make spaces safer”.
A special thanks to high school students at Cooks Hill Campus who helped Nick Fintan paintthe mural.
The project was funded with support from the Newcastle Business Improvement Association.
