Small Walls

The Small Walls project refreshed and improved 11 businesses and 15 walls in the Newcastle CBD, beautifying over 400 square metres of wall space for businesses who were currently, or had recently, expressed vandalism on their properties.

Urban beautification and placemaking to make community spaces feel safer.

The Wall Station secured a Special Business Rate grant from Newcastle Council to install 15 murals on 11 business properties who were experiencing vandalism and graffiti in Newcastle’s CBD over a 12 month period in 2022.

Finished Walls

Small Walls were defined as walls that were under 40 square metres and could be painted with an A-frame ladder

The murals have contributed to placemaking, community engagement, deepening connection to and ownership of space by the local community, creation of local landmarks, and providing real solutions to businesses facing ongoing graffiti that cannot be resolved by high pressure cleaning, chemical cleaning or anti-graffiti coatings.

“The artwork by Sam Absurd and Jade Burton has added life to the heavy developing area of the Newcastle West precinct. The mural which was installed on the long weekend of October 2022, visually connected our building and location to the long weekend of festivities, and was enjoyed by punters and business owners like myself. The mural has been a massive success, and shows that Newcastle is willing to open our arms and eyes to projects like this.”

“The mural that the Small Walls project arranged for us completely refreshed the entrance to the Roost! We'd had some beautiful artwork on our walls for many years but it had started to look worse for wear and had sadly been vandalised, Jacinta approached us and found us an incredibly talented local artist to bring new life to our walls. Working with Jacinta & Dan was a pleasure and they cared as much as we did about the final result. We still regularly get people stopping outside the Roost to take photos and comment on our giant chickens, and we couldn't be happier with the outcome.”

Michael Hearne

“What a wonderful opportunity to have a mural on our building via the Small Walls program. It is a wonderful pop of colour and a homage to Newcastle’s rich live music scene. We often see members of the public stopping to admire the piece and taking photos. It certainly adds to Newcastle’s evolving streetscape and atmosphere, while allowing a local artist to be commissioned and complete the piece. This wouldn’t have been possible without the Small Walls Program, The Wall Station, Jacinta and Inari. Thank you!”
