Winmalee High School mural

The Wall Station teamed up with Sydney artist Helen Proctor to install a school mural on a shipping container at Winmalee High School in the lower Blue Mountains in NSW.

The school has an annual commemoration of the 2013 bushfires and reached out to The Wall Station to create a mural as part of the commemoration program. The school was heavily impacted during the bushfires, with 20 – 30 school families losing homes on a school day. The mural by Helen Proctor will represent the importance of home and shelter amongst the the environment in the mountains.

Helen grew up in the Blue Mountains and went to school at Winmalee. “It was really to cool to paint the shipping container which is a spot that I literally sat in front of when I was at school.” The school still have artworks by Helen hanging in their buildings and were proud to have her return to campus to share her skills with a new generation of students.

“We are thrilled with the mural. The entire experience was amazing. The students are so proud of their work!” - Visual Arts Teacher Erin Douglas from Winmalee High School.

ABOUT HELEN PROCTOR

Helen is an Australian artist who has just returned from living abroad in Europe. Whilst overseas she developed her focus on abstract landscape painting both in her studio and on large-scale mural projects.

Her current practice explores the use of colour and methods of abstraction to depict the emotional nostalgia that is revived from a personal connection to place.

For ten years she carved out a reputation within the Sydney street art scene for her stencils, paste-ups and murals. Now she returns to where it all began to showcase her new work and reconnect with her roots.
