City of Ryde Council Mural
Nick Fintan’s Sager Place mural design features three key elements which were identified through community consultation with local residents and businesses. The semi-circle pattern that runs across designs 1 and 3 is a reference to the ‘Dress Circle Estate’ – the name given to the street design of the immediate area when it was developed in the 1960s. Local streets were named according to a theatrical theme. Some of the greatest Australian stars on stage and screen are commemorated in the street names of East Ryde.
1. The ballerina is a reference to Peggy Sager who was the namesake of Sager Place. Peggy was a Sydney-based dancer in the Kirsova Ballet in late 1941, and she danced classics such as Swan Lake and Les Sylphides.
2. The flora element is a Jacaranda blossom. Jacaranda’s were a popular recommendation by local residents.
3. The rainbow lorikeet represents a local wildlife favourite in the community.
The mural forms part of the City of Ryde’s Street Art Program which involved commissioning The Wall Station and artist Nick Fintan to install a mural on the southern wall of 8 Sager Place (Fox and Bird Cafe) at the local shopping area in East Ryde.
