Hunter Multicultural Centre New Cafe Mural
The Wall Station has kicked off 2018 with a brand new mural being completed. Established visual artist Nick Fintan from Sydney, has just made the leap into mural painting with a community project involving students from Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus and a new cafe development at the Hunter Multicultural Centre in Newcastle.
Working with acrylics, brushes and rollers – Nick took the eager students through a mural painting workshop day just before school wrapped up last year to help with the initial stages of this multicultural-themed mural at the new cafe.
As a site specific mural, the design embraces the repurposed heritage bowling club building that has been modified to suit a range of community programs, as well as vibrant new community gardens and an industrial men’s shed in an adjacent space. The Federation star in the artwork represents Australia, the map of the world represents multiculturalism and the Waratah flower has multiple reference points – the Hunter Multicultural Centre is located in the suburb of Waratah, and it is the insignia of many community groups and Government Departments including Multicultural NSW and it is the flower featured in the gigantic 44metre tall Shep Fairey mural in Sydney. Shep Fairey is known internationally for his Obama Hope poster artwork.
It is the first mural that the Hunter Multicultural Centre has commissioned and they were thrilled to collaborate with the neighbouring high school with whom they have a strong relationship.
